The Hero’s Journey goes Bollywood!! – with Anjali Sengupta at the 2022 Creative Mental Health Forum and Self Care Retreat.

The Hero’s Journey meets Bollywood dance in this unique, multi-modal, expressive arts workshop based on the work of Joseph Campbell and Anjali’s own explorations of the psycho-technologies of Bollywood dance, music and performance arts as portals that allow us to access and express different dimensions of our experience.

Bollywood Dance is not just a style of dance- it is a multilayered experience where music, rhythm, dance, drama, story telling and performance arts come together to create a magical world where anything is possible.
The Hero’s Journey is a universal story template is a way to make sense of and reprocess times of transition and crisis. It offers a lens through which we can centre ourselves as the main character in our own life, reclaim a sense of power and agency to choose how we respond to challenging experiences. It allows us to gain insights, new perspectives and new ways of understanding and learning from our experience.

“Hard times require furious dancing”

~ Alice Walker

“You need chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star”

~ Friedrich Nietzsche

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”

~  Joseph Campbell

2021 was a year that we are never going to forget, but what if it was a blockbuster Bollywood movie starring none other than YOU?

What does it look and feel like to be the superstar (and not just the hero/heroine) starring in the lead role, in the unfolding drama of your life that was 2021? What would the trailer look like?
In this workshop, we will explore the core elements of Bollywood dance including isolation movements and rhythmic movements of the body/body parts, explore an event or theme from 2021 through the lens of the Hero’s Journey and create a Bollywood Dance Drama, a montage of movements that expresses and embodies the 3 main stages of the hero’s journey (separation, initiation and return).
Choose costumes and props that help you unleash your inner superstar and embody your story of overcoming challenge and emerging victorious- and be as dramatic as you possibly can!

This session is an opportunity to process, express and integrate your experiences of transition and massive changes in our internal and external worlds.

It is also a celebration of your capacity for joyful expression and the resilience, grit and grace that it takes to continue to shine your light in the midst of darkness.
