Riding the waves…

“Riding the waves…” 11 x 14 oil pastel drawing.
The metaphor of emotions as waves really resonates for me, especially right now. Fear, grief, despair, gratitude, love, uncertainty, relief, gratitude, more gratitude, connectedness and dis-connectedness at the same time, overwhelm, self-compassion. I hope you know all that you are feeling is completely normal in this situation even if you’re feeling numb or like you’re losing it. The waves keep coming, and right now the best we can do is ride them, reach out to our supports, make art, listen to soothing music, do yoga, meditate, read, write, and practice self-compassion as we all ride these waves together.

Shannon, the peaks and troughs, the changes of direction and the contrast of colour, the intensity are what leap out at me at first. As I gaze longer though, I notice the layer near the bottom of the page and I enter a calmer, less jarring space where I can momentarily rest.
