She glanced backward to see all she had known fall away,
A wave of fear surged upward into her chest and she felt her hands cramp. Her eyes closed tightly as she was jolted forward then sucked backward up the face of the wave.
Suddenly she realised she was on the crest, and for a moment time stood still.
No longer in control, she looked ahead. She could not clearly make out what was in front of her through the spray; all she knew was that it was unknown; it was new and she was excited.

Leeza, in sitting with this image, my interest is captured by the direction of the gaze of the figure in the boat. They seem to be looking forward, despite the momentous movement behind and all around, and I want to see what they see – that which is just outside the frame of view.
