KIM BILLINGTON – “Stories of Transformation” at the 2022 Creative Mental Health Forum and Self Care Retreat

Narratively inspired author of  “A Counsellor’s Companion” and “Counselling Conversations”, Kim Billington, joins the 2022 Creative Mental Health Forum and Self Care Retreat to share an experiential folk tale work shop.

STORIES OF TRANSFORMATION:

DREAMING OFF INTO THE LAVISHLY EMBROIDERED TAPESTRIES OF FOLKTALES

Kim shares the different ways she introduces a folktale in a therapeutic setting, and why they have been helpful in her work with children and adults. Her muse has been the work of Joseph Campbell, and his ideas about The Hero’s Journey.

Kim demonstrates the telling of a short, traditional style story. The story will be explored, guided by key narrative therapy questions to delve into resonant images, values, themes, hopes and meanings.

In Kim’s workshop, each person is gifted a scroll containing a short folktale that they can story-board: creating a visual vessel for what the story carries for them. Partners may then share their gifted story to each other. The workshop closes with a whole group reflection. A short handout about therapeutic storytelling will also be included.

ABOUT KIM

Kim’s work has included child and family counselling, family violence trauma counselling, EAP, carers, bereavement counselling, co-facilitating men’s behaviour change programs and providing clinical supervision privately, and for students in their Masters’ of Counselling placements at Monash University.

For over 15 years, Kim has been creating unique training seminars to pass forward her ever-evolving therapeutic approaches. She enjoys inspiring and encouraging practitioners to discover their own style and ways to connect with their clients. Kim holds a Masters in Narrative Therapy & Community Work, a Masters in Counselling and a B.Ed.

COUNSELLING CONVERSATIONS

I was recently delighted to be invited to review Kim’s latest book, Counselling Conversations, and am pleased to share my review here with you.

“Counselling Conversations, Kim Billington’s new book, is like a community of practitioners that welcomes us, the readers, in. We are invited to participate, as witnesses, to conversations between Kim and the diverse group of counsellors and therapists that she interviews.

Kim’s own curious inquiries open up stories of people and practices that have roots in lived experience, in families, cultures and values, that are alive in their real worldness and deeply infused with wisdom.
The community that we are invited to become part of in this book, whilst colourful and diverse, shares a common territory of values, creating a place for us to connect in together. In this place, there are spaces for unconventional stories to be told, shared and witnessed, we can play and explore, experience self-determination and collective determination. Ultimately, this book is a hopeful space, a meeting place, where it is possible to be part of the change we would like to see in the world.”
