REMOVING OBSTACLES: RECONNECTING TO CREATIVITY

Something that comes up frequently in the Supervision Studio is the challenge of staying connected to our own creative practice when our job involves facilitating others and supporting their creativity.

When people ask me how I do it, I am happy to confide that I am as vulnerable to this concern as anyone else is. I often feel that I’m not engaging in enough of my own art making! How absurd, given that I should know more than anyone how beneficial my practice is for my own wellbeing and mental health.

I reflected this week on how I can remove some of the obstacles that prevent me from doing as much art as I like. I realised that I want to paint about our garden. The beautiful creatures, the trees and shrubs that inhabit this place, the way they dance together within the elements and atmosphere, they are my friends, they give me such delight and peace and sooth my soul.

But it’s so cold! And rainy! And I love to paint from life. I can’t sit outside in this weather!

And all the while, I have a lovely room, with a window to look out of at the garden.

Moving a few items of furniture – the foot stool, the coffee table, and the rug – created an amazing, quite miraculous new space for my old table, and a chair, and some paint brushes and a board to paint on and… there I am, I’ve removed some obstacles, and here I am, in my bliss, telling these beautiful friends “thank you, I love you, you’re beautiful” with every grateful stroke of the paintbrush.
