Artist's Statement
I specialize in creating collages using antique and vintage papers, as well as found ephemera, which significantly influence my work.
The patina and texture of these materials, often dating between the 1870s and 1960s, are both exquisite and unique. As a graphic designer, I incorporate strong elements of colour, tone, and composition in my collages. My primary focus is on themes such as the reuse and renewal of antique materials, a restrained composition, and a vibrant use of colour.
Each collage that I create is a unique piece of art, yet aesthetically related, often created in a series. My recent exhibition was based on my Faded Flora Series, which was directly inspired by the sepia-toned photographs of Australia’s unique flora.
The process of creating a collage is slow and deliberate, which involves finding old books, curating papers and ephemera, assembling elements, and finally composing. Each collage can take months or years to complete because the right piece of paper in the right colour needs to be found to complete the work.
I have been collecting most of these materials for the past 12 years and am looking forward to sharing them with participants in my forthcomning “Vintage Collage” workshops at Inverloch Pop-Up ART CO.

Martine Zajacek
Artist's Biography
Martine Zajacek is an emerging artist who specializes in creating beautiful collages using antique and vintage printed paper. Her artworks are complex and showcase the forgotten beauty of this medium.
Martine graduated with a Bachelor of Graphic Communication from the Queensland College of Art in 1987, where her love for printing processes and the tactile qualities of paper and ink began. She worked as a Graphic Designer in Brisbane for many years.
After living in Inverloch for a decade, Martine developed a strong connection to the landscape that she had never experienced before. The colors, textures, and natural beauty of this ancient landscape inspired her to create “abstract landscape” photographs. Her daily walks provided the opportunity to both experience the ever-changing nature of the coastal landscape and document its textural beauty.
Martine’s passion for showcasing the inherent beauty of antique and vintage printed paper is evident in her collages. Each artwork is a testament to her skill in using this medium to create layered complexity and beauty.
Her love for the tactile qualities of paper and ink, combined with her eye for natural beauty, has made Martine an emerging artist to watch.
