“Weaving Nature’s Wonders” with Erin McCrorey.

Join Erin in a workshop to inspire creativity and sustainability.

“Weaving is not merely a craft for me, but a reflection of my intrinsic values and my profound connection to nature.”

Weaving Nature’s Wonders with artist and creative arts therapist, Erin McCrorey, is a workshop designed to inspire creativity and sustainability. Participants will learn how to weave artistic and functional wall hangings that turn non-Australian “weedy” plants and other found fibres into art, while acknowledging the rich traditional wisdom and origins of weaving practices.

This experience is designed for creative/experiential therapists, counsellors, psychotherapists, allied health professionals, educators, and arts and health workers at the 2025 Creative Mental Health Forum.

The workshop theme: sustainability and creativity

Join us for a workshop that acknowledges and respects the spiritual and practical significance of traditional weaving in daily life, rituals, and survival.

Participants will learn about the essential skill of making string for purposes such as fishing nets and carrying food, with insights on using waterproof string from Cumbungi (bullrush) and Stringy Bark.

We will explore three non-Australian “weedy” plants—‘Cherry Plum’ (Prunus cerasifera) for stakes, along with ‘Kniphofia’ and ‘Chasmanthe’ for their soft fibres to weave with—discussing their benefits and ethical foraging practices.

Participants will have the opportunity to create wall hangings and discover creative and functional art made from “weedy” plants, garden finds, and recycled materials.

What to bring: We encourage participants to bring your own scissors and any found or personal materials you wish to weave into your creations.

Erin McCrorey is an artist and Creative Arts Therapist who lives and works on Boon Wurrung country, Victoria. Erin is committed to engaging children and young people through the arts for mental health and wellbeing. With a strong set of humanistic values, she believes that it is through arts-based and relational practices that we can begin to heal ourselves, our communities, and the world at large. Erin works with young people in school and community settings.

Erin shares:

“As an artist deeply engaged in the practice of weaving with natural fibres, my work serves as a tapestry intertwining various facets of my life and identity. Weaving is not merely a craft for me, but a reflection of my intrinsic values and my profound connection to nature. This art form embodies my appreciation for the intricate interdependence and interconnectedness that exist within the natural world and within ourselves. My garden, a living canvas, further deepens this relationship, teaching me lessons of growth, resilience, and harmony. Through this beautifully reciprocal relationship, I am continually informed and inspired, allowing me to evolve both as an artist and as a person. In my practice, I find a space where personal values, artistic expression, and a reverence for nature coalesce, guiding me on a path of perpetual learning and discovery.”
