Video: New York art dealer Carly Aguilera interviews Carla van Laar about the links between art therapy and her art practice.
My artworks are my stories. They embody traces of my lived experience – encounters and connections with people and the living world, places, spaces, environments, objects, materials, methods, ideas, interests, memories, dreams, imagination and emotions. The artworks here show how change has been present in my relationships with these kinds of things over the years, and also the continuity of my art practice over time. My visual narrative is a dynamic story that is re-created every time the artworks are viewed, as we engage in feeling what our eyes are drawn towards, the emotions that are evoked, the memories that are stirred, the values we connect with and the meanings we reveal and co-create together through our seeing.
